Environ Microbiol – CrossRef Google Scholar Carnevale RA () Antimicrobial use in food animals and human health. Antibiotics for Subtherapeutic Purpose The use of subtherapeutic antibiotics is an impor-tant component of modern livestock production. Anti-biotics are added to feed in regulated small amounts for maintaining health, promoting growth, and increasing feed efficiency. Subtherapeutic use must adhere to manufacturer’s label Size: KB.

The advisability of using certain antibiotics, particularly penicillin and tetracycline, in animal feeds has been questioned because of their use in human medicine. Any use of an antibiotic that is prescribed for humans presents some risks to human health, whether the use is for humans, animals or for other purposes; but, the uses also have benefits. Otherwise, they would not persist. Veterinary pharmaceuticals include a wide range of anti-infectives and additives in the use for animal health, nutrition, reproduction, and productivity. Antimicrobials are among the most extensively used drugs in developing countries largely due to large population of livestock and the burden of infectious diseases. The introduction of penicillin in and other antibiotics thereafter Cited by: 1.

Antimicrobial resistance is a global public health crisis that threatens our ability to successfully treat bacterial infections (1, 2). Microbiologists and infectious disease specialists have long recognized the problem—the discoverer of penicillin Sir Alexander Fleming himself drew attention to the threat of resistance from underdosing (3)—but realization of the vast scale of the Cited by: Antibiotic use in livestock is the use of antibiotics for any purpose in the husbandry of livestock, which includes treatment when ill (therapeutic), treatment of a group of animals when at least one is diagnosed with clinical infection (metaphylaxis), and preventative treatment (prophylaxis).Antibiotics are an important tool to treat animal as well as human disease, safeguard animal health.
